They were almost completely packed and ready to go when we got there, Selina Sanchez loading the last of her camera equipment into the back of their SUV.

“Is Ms. Lawrence still on the premises, Ms. Sanchez?” Mort greeted her.

Selina closed the SUV’s hatch. “We were just getting ready to leave, Sheriff. You told us we could.”

“I’ve got a few more questions. Shouldn’t take too long.”

Selina regarded me diffidently, as if to question my presence without directly challenging it.

“Should we go inside?” Mort asked her, showing a higher degree of deference than I was used to from him.

Selina nodded and led the way to the room, the door cracked open in spite of the cold. We entered to find Angie Lawrence just closing her suitcase.

“Oh,” she remarked, spotting Mort and then me.

Mort looked from her to Selina, and back again. “There’s a problem with the story you told us about your whereabouts the night Tad Hollenbeck was murdered.”

Selina glanced toward Angie, whose gaze remained rooted on Mort.

“See, according to your server, Ms. Lawrence, you left the table after ordering your food and didn’t return until after it had been served.”

“I didn’t lie, Sheriff.”

“No? What would you call it, then?”

“You asked where we were around when Tad was murdered. We said we had dinner at that diner. I never said I was there for the whole two hours.”

“So where were you, Angie?” I asked her.

This time, she did glance at Selina, but only briefly. “Tad and I . . .”

“You were having an affair,” I completed for her.

“I wouldn’t call it that. Relationships between staff members are expressly forbidden at Stalker.”

“But Tad Hollenbeck had been relieved of his duties that day, hadn’t he?” Mort reminded her.

“Yes, but I was still an outside producer for the show. If they found out . . .”

Angie’s voice drifted off again.

“How close were the two of you?” I asked, as tactfully as I could manage.

“Not close enough for Tad to tell me anything more than he did when it came to the truth about what really brought him here.”

“He never even hinted at what he was really up to?”

Angie thought for a moment. “Not beyond saying he wasn’t going to need Stalker anymore because he was about to strike gold.”

“Those were his exact words?”

“Or very close, yes.”

“So by ‘gold,’ he didn’t necessarily mean the real story that had brought him to Cabot Cove?”

That seemed to throw her for a bit of a loop. “No, but I assumed that’s what he meant.”

“And he never mentioned anything about being a descendant himself of one of the original founding fathers of Cabot Cove?”

“Wait, was he?”

“It appears so, yes.”

“He never told me,” Angie insisted, a bit of derision edging into her voice, even bitterness. “Apparently, there were a lot of things he didn’t tell me, so I guess we weren’t as close as I thought we were, after all.”

“Your personal life is your own business,” Mort told her. “I’m interested in the timeline, as in when exactly you were with Mr.
